Faces in Places
A practice-based research project I conducted over the course of 6 months. My research question was what the fundamental components of character design where, which I investigated by designing and making eight leather masks, each with a distinct personality based on The Four Hippocratic Temperaments.
I used colour, shape, texture, and expression to define each personality according to the research I conducted around visual stimuli and character design psychology. The masks are inspired by the phenomenon of "Pareidolia" - specifically Apophenia - by which people recognise patterns in ambiguous shapes, most notably the human face. Everybody sees faces in places!

Pareidolia is a matter of perspective and interpretation. To communicate this, I constructed four supporting sets to house my masks, creating a small display.
If you would like to dive into each individual personality and the inspirations behind their design, I have included a link below. Next time you look at the front of a car or the cracks in the sidewalk, I hope you see a face smiling back at you :)
